A climbing wall and a mural of Captain James Cook are among the attractions of an upgraded park in Griffith.

The renamed Rotary Captain Cook Park was upgraded as the result of a partnership between the Rotary Club of Canberra East and the ACT Government's Canberra Urban Parks and Places.

The Rotary Club of Canberra East contributed $45,000 in cash and kind towards the upgrade, a gift to the community to help celebrate the centenary of Rotary worldwide. The ACT Government contributed another $68,000 to the upgrade. A number of local businesses also contributed financially.

The Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory, Mr Jon Stanhope said the Rotary Captain Cook Park was a tangible manifestation of the spirit of the Canberra Social Plan. "This partnership between Rotary and Canberra Urban Parks and Places shows how collaboration can benefit the whole community," Mr Stanhope said. "This park will be a meeting place and playground for new generations of Canberrans, a marriage of the old and new, a modern facility that will make better use of one of Canberra's oldest open spaces."
