The Rotary Club of Canberra East is a part of the worldwide fellowship of Rotary International, an international organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. In 166 countries worldwide, approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 30,000 Rotary clubs.
Over nearly 100 years, Rotary has grown from one small club of four members to a worldwide network of men and women who share a common vision for a better world. The world's first service organization, Rotary has a long history of helping those in need and uniting people of different cultures and beliefs. Through the work of individual Rotary clubs, and through the programs of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation, Rotary is making the world a better place.
Our club in Canberra is part of District 9710, and has around 35 members, both male and female, with a wide range of ages and experience. It's a very active Club and our members come from a diverse range of vocations and professions
We meet weekly on Monday evenings at the Embassy Motel on Hopetoun Circuit in Deakin, ACT, beginning with fellowship from 6.00pm onwards, until the meeting starts at 6:15pm. We enjoy an excellent 1 course meal (at a reasonable price) and the highlight of the meeting is a stimulating and topical guest speaker. The meeting concludes at 8:00pm. Many social activities for members and partners are held during the year.
Being a Rotarian provides limitless opportunities for community service. Such service can occur in our local community, within one's vocation or even internationally, depending on the interests of the individual member and his or her desire to give to the community. The principles that bind us together in this fellowship are the desire to build better communities, by adding, supporting and strengthening the individual fibres that make up the fabric of our communities, locally and on a worldwide scale.
Although being a Rotarian does involve a small financial cost as well as a time commitment, Rotarians find this a small price to pay for the privilege of being involved in this worldwide organization, dedicated to making our one precious earth a better place in which to live.
